50 years after the launch of the first diver’s watch made in Glashütte, this proud heritage was revived by the Glashütte Original manufactory: The SeaQ is the legitimate successor to the legendary Spezimatic RP TS 200 and at the same time has its own unique character. In keeping with the historical predecessor, the steel models were previously only available with a closed case back. Now, Glashütte Original introduces the option for a sapphire crystal case back. Watch enthusiasts who are keen to unveil the mechanical movement of their previously purchased SeaQ can also have the case back replaced.
The design of the SeaQ presented the designers and engineers at Glashütte Original with a special challenge. In the exactly 50 years that had passed since the Spezimatic RP TS 200 went down in history as the first German diver's watch, market demands and production methods had changed considerably. The SeaQ was to combine the finest Glashütte craftsmanship with the indestructibility and functionality of a professional diving instrument while retaining the character and design language of its historical predecessor. For this reason, all SeaQ models were initially fitted with a closed case back, which was adopted as a stylistic element. Its engraving depicts the maritime symbol of a trident with the Glashütte Original double-G logo against a background of 20 waves - a reference to the water resistance of 20 bar and the tested qualities as a diver's watch in accordance with DIN 8306 and ISO 6425. In 2022, Glashütte Original expanded the product family with a version in red gold, which was the first model within the series to feature a sapphire crystal case back.
Since the launch of the first SeaQ model in 2019, the product line has become a global fan favourite and now consists of a total of six variants. While many collectors appreciate the SeaQ as an authentic reinterpretation of a classic, other enthusiasts value its modern versatility. Glashütte Original is now fulfilling the frequently expressed customer request for a sapphire crystal back option for the stainless steel models as well as for the bicolour version, which brings out the inner beauty of the SeaQ. The in-house Calibre 39-11 bears the typical characteristics of finest Glashütte watchmaking art: the three-quarter plate with Glashütte stripe finish, the swan-neck fine adjustment or the skeletonised rotor with double-G logo are an expression of the highest standards of craftsmanship, both in technical and aesthetic terms. Owners of previously acquired SeaQ watches have the opportunity of having the closed case back replaced with a sapphire crystal case back. Of course, the water resistance of 20 bar remains fully intact.
From December 2024, the SeaQ 39.5 mm will be available with an optional sapphire crystal case back from all official Glashütte Original retailers. In January 2025, the Glashütte Original Customer Service will launch the chargeable service for replacing the case back of previously purchased SeaQ models.
